Denitrification in intertidal sediments of a tropical estuary subject to increasing development pressures

چکیده
Abstract Darwin Harbour is a working port and the most populated city in Northern Territory of Australia. This macrotidal estuary located wet–dry tropics Australia notwithstanding mounting development pressures region, largely unmodified. The prevailing oligotrophic condition estuarine waters suggest that biogeochemical cycling sediments remain active, buffering influence anthropogenic inputs. We tested hypothesis nutrient hotspots exist depositional low-velocity zones, with gradient high to low nitrogen processing from upper outer reaches estuary. A number factors were examined for their on effectiveness denitrification these putative key process driving removal, particular emphasis carbon-loading extremes tidal creeks, spatial gradients along seasonality. There significant differences rates between hypereutrophic/eutrophic creeks receive largest proportion treated sewage loads region mesotrophic/oligotrophic comparatively undisturbed. Net benthic fluxes dinitrogen efflux more than an order magnitude higher lower, respectively, degraded (hypereutrophic/eutrophic) creek systems where efficiency (DE%) was < 40%. Denitrification (Dinitrogen efflux) (mesotrophic/oligotrophic) broader sites (~ 8 mmol N m −2 day −1 ) remained > 65%, particularly during wet season. On whole-of-estuary basis, conjunction mechanisms such as burial could feasibly make substantial impact, abating Although considerable variability encountered, across seasons, elevated zones not convincing. More influential are potential ‘reactors’ but capacity can be by overloading nutrients.

Seasonal variation in denitrification and dissolved nitrogen fluxes in intertidal sediments of the Tagus estuary, Portugal
Dissolved nitrogen fluxes and denitrification were studied during 1 yr in intertidal sediments of the Tagus estuary (Portugal). This study focused on the factors regulating both nitrogen fluxes across the sediment-water interface and denitrification, and on the effect of microphytobenthos activity in controlling nitrogen cycling in these areas. Sampling was performed monthly at 2 stations locat...
متن کاملDenitrification prevails over anammox in tropical mangrove sediments (Goa, India).
Denitrification, anammox (Anx) and di-nitrogen fixation were examined in two mangrove ecosystems- the anthropogenically influenced Divar and the relatively pristine Tuvem. Stratified sampling at 2 cm increments from 0 to 10 cm depth revealed denitrification as the main process of N₂ production in mangrove sediments. At Divar, denitrification was ∼3 times higher than at Tuvem with maximum activi...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Microbial Patterns in a Tropical Macrotidal Estuary Subject to Urbanization
Darwin Harbour in northern Australia is an estuary in the wet-dry tropics subject to increasing urbanization with localized water quality degradation due to increased nutrient loads from urban runoff and treated sewage effluent. Tropical estuaries are poorly studied compared to temperate systems and little is known about the microbial community-level response to nutrients. We aimed to examine t...
متن کاملCommunity dynamics and activity of ammonia-oxidizing prokaryotes in intertidal sediments of the Yangtze estuary.
Diversity, abundance, and activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) were investigated using the ammonia monooxygenase α subunit (amoA) in the intertidal sediments of the Yangtze Estuary. Generally, AOB had a lower diversity of amoA genes than did AOA in this study. Clone library analysis revealed great spatial variations in both AOB and AOA communities alo...
متن کاملBiogenic silica in intertidal marsh plants and associated sediments of the Yangtze Estuary.
Biogenic silica (BSi) contents in the marsh plants (Phragmites australis, Scirpus mariqueter and Spartina alterniflora) and associated sediments in Chongming Island eastern intertidal flat of the Yangtze Estuary were determined. The BSi contents in P. australis, S. mariqueter and S. alterniflora varied from 25.78-42.74 mg/g, 5.71-19.53 mg/g and 6.71-8.92 mg/g, respectively. Over the entire grow...
